Google Warns EU Regulations Will Crush Search Quality
Google has implemented changes to its online search results in Europe to comply with European Union antitrust regulators, but warns that this will lead to a significant decrease in search quality. The company's Senior Vice President of Knowledge & Information Nick Fox described the change as the biggest quality drop in the 29-year history of Google's search engine.
The redesign aims to level the playing field for companies that serve up information in Google Search results, elevating price-comparison services like Expedia and Booking.com in travel and hospitality categories. However, this update shifts digital search results in Europe, creating a new set of companies that will succeed in search.
Advertisers, particularly those in the hospitality, travel, and local services sectors, must rethink their search strategy due to the structural change under the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA). Radu Oncescu, a social media expert in Romania, noted that Google is now displaying a new disclaimer for hotel booking prices, customized by the booking partner based on factors such as device type.
