Google Wearables Monitor Insulin Resistance in Real-Time
Google has introduced a new health feature for its wearables that tracks insulin resistance over time. This feature, which marks a first for consumer tech companies, combines artificial intelligence with sensors such as an accelerometer and heart rate monitor to gauge physiological factors. Google's Health app will notify users if there are signs of increased insulin resistance, at which point they may consider lifestyle changes or consult a physician.
The new tool does not continuously monitor glucose levels but rather tracks subtle shifts in the body's ability to produce energy from food. Untreated high insulin resistance can lead to conditions such as prediabetes and Type 2 diabetes. Google is combining this feature with others, including tracking shifts in blood pressure trends and nighttime breathing patterns, into a set of tools called Health Guardian.
The company's goal is not to diagnose or directly measure glucose but rather to highlight the invisible stress the body is experiencing. Users can connect their continuous glucose monitor through the Health Connect app. The feature was developed with training data from over 100,000 individuals and uses AI to correlate subtle physiological shifts.
