Google Wins $10 Million Auction for Spirit Airlines' Business Data
Google has won a bankruptcy auction for Spirit Airlines' internal business data and software, paying $10 million to acquire the package. The data includes employee emails, Microsoft Teams messages, spreadsheets, calendars, and other information covering areas such as marketing, productivity, and airline operations. According to filings, the package contains around 100 million emails and 500 million Teams messages.
The search giant will use this data to improve its products and AI models, reflecting growing demand among tech companies for large datasets drawn from real-world business operations. Google confirmed that it is not purchasing customer data or credit card information, and Passenger profiles and loyalty program information are excluded from the package.
The data will be de-identified before being handed over to Google, with personally identifiable information removed. Google initially submitted a bid of $5 million for this data, but outbid AI data company Mercor at $10 million.
