Google Wins $10 Million Auction for Spirit Airlines Data
Google has acquired Spirit Airlines' business data in an auction for AI training. The search giant bid $10 million on the deidentified data assets, which include emails, calendar information, chats, documents, and spreadsheets. Mercor.io Corporation submitted a lower bid of $7.5 million.
The sale agreement requires Google to maintain the data in deidentified form and not intentionally associate it with any person or household. Spirit Airlines retains the right to keep copies of the data for winding down its business or complying with legal requirements.
The airline filed for bankruptcy on August 29, 2025, and ceased operations earlier this year. A hearing is scheduled for August 19, 2026, to approve the sale to Google in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York.
