Google's Agentic AI: A Thin Line Between Minimalism and Data Collection
Google recently launched its Pixel 11 Pro and Pixel Watch 5 at its Made by Google event, emphasizing the need to use smartphones less in order to be more present. The company's VP Rick Osterloh stated that phones can do too much, requiring users to constantly tap and scroll, leading to distractions like dog videos.
Google introduced a feature called HiLight on the camera bar of its Pixel 11 Pro models, which glows when an important contact is calling, allowing users to stay informed without checking their home screen. This feature will soon support text message notifications as well.
However, some are skeptical about Google's intentions. They argue that instead of promoting tech minimalism, the company is selling agentic AI disguised as minimalism. The integration of apps and AI allows Google to gather more information about users while making it seem like they're doing less work.
The goal of these updates seems to be to prime users for a future where smart wearables are at the center of device ecosystems, taking photos and sending them through smart glasses or ordering Uber Eats through voice commands.
