Google's AI Error Leaves Bookshop in Peril
The Viridian Bookshop in Downtown Willoughby has been dealing with an issue that's affecting its business. In July, owner Chanel Bush discovered that Google's AI Overview had listed her shop as permanently closed.
According to Bush, customers were deterred from visiting the store because of this misinformation. She searched for her own shop and found that it was labeled as closed on Google's search page, with an incorrect address even listed.
Bush engaged in a series of debates with the AI bot, trying to correct the error. However, the program continued to provide inaccurate information, sometimes stating that the store never existed at all.
When asked where it got its information, the AI bot said it focused on giving an answer, rather than providing accurate information. This was a significant revelation for Bush, who realized that the AI's goal was not to give correct answers, but to provide any answer at all.
