Google's AI Hurricane Model Predicts Storm Tracks Up to 15 Days Ahead
A new artificial intelligence model developed by Google has shown promise in improving hurricane forecasting. The model can predict storm tracks, intensity, and wind fields up to 15 days ahead.
In tests, the three-day forecasts of the AI model were found to be as accurate as two-day forecasts from current top forecasters involved in the effort. This extra day could make a significant difference in evacuation decisions and emergency preparations, especially when a hurricane strengthens rapidly.
The model can produce up to 1,000 possible forecasts, compared to the typical 50 now. This vast dataset could help meteorologists identify potentially dangerous outcomes that smaller groups might miss.
