Google's AI Prices Rip-Off: Study Finds Higher Costs for Same Products
Google's recent update to its home page has introduced AI features that are raising concerns about fairness and accuracy. The tech giant replaced its iconic 'Search' button with various AI features, which are being used to analyze consumers' personal data to tailor price tags in real time.
A study by e-commerce SEO company Productrise found that the same exact products appear 21.6 percent more expensive on average in Google's AI Mode compared to traditional search. The experiment showed that the primary vendor for the same product differed just under 50 percent of the time between the two modes, suggesting that AI Mode is prioritizing a strikingly different group of sellers.
According to Productrise, only 1.28 percent of products analyzed appeared in both traditional search and AI mode 'for the same search on the same day.' When they did overlap, the actual seller differed 49.6 percent of the time.
