Google's Android XR Brings Smart Glasses Back into Focus
Google is making another attempt at entering the smart glasses market with its new Android XR operating system, which was unveiled on December 12. The company is hoping to learn from the missteps of Google Glass and differentiate itself with the help of Gemini generative AI.
The first devices to use Android XR are expected to be a pair of Samsung glasses codenamed Project Moohan, which will hit store shelves in 2025. These smart glasses will allow users to navigate hands-free and perform various tasks such as searching the internet or playing YouTube videos using natural language.
Android XR is designed to power various types of smart glasses and Google plans to start privately testing it on new hardware soon. The company also announced that it will provide early access to hardware in exchange for collaboration with its internal XR team through an Android XR Developer Bootcamp.
