Google's Android XR Glasses Face Audio Capture Challenges

Google's latest translation app update has revealed a feature that suggests the company is struggling to develop reliable audio capture capabilities for its Android XR glasses. The update, version 10.32.66, includes a setting called 'Listening area (Glasses only)' with two modes: 'Front only' and 'Surrounding area'. These settings imply that Google's system may not be able to infer which speaker is being addressed in real-time.

The presence of this feature suggests that the platform cannot reliably distinguish between speakers, a problem that has been evident in live translation demos. This is not just about mistranslating words but also about confidently transcribing the wrong voice.

Furthermore, the setting is gated to 'Glasses only', which implies that it may be reserved for future devices. Currently, there are no Android XR glasses available on the market, with Samsung's Galaxy XR being the only option at $1,799 since October 21, 2025.
