Google's 'Backstory' AI Tool Accelerates Media Fact-Checking

Google DeepMind's AI tool 'Backstory' has been accelerating media fact-checking by determining whether an image is AI-generated and investigating its origin. Introduced in 2025, Backstory uses a combination of techniques to identify AI-created images and their context. The tool checks for SynthID, a watermark added by Google's image generation AI Nano Banana, and C2PA metadata, which embeds content authentication information into images.

In addition to detecting AI-generated images, Backstory also tracks the online history of an image, including whether it has been previously published on the internet and in what context. This capability is particularly useful for fact-checkers, who can use Backstory as a quick reference tool to help identify misinformation and false claims.

India Today, one of India's largest news organizations, uses Backstory as part of its fact-checking team to help streamline daily operations. According to Bhar Krishna, who leads the team, 'Almost everyone on our team uses Backstory in combination with other tools... The great thing about Backstory is that we can do all the work we used to do with five different tools and five different logins, all in one place.'

While Backstory has been praised for its ability to speed up media fact-checking, it's not without limitations. A reporter from Nieman Journalism Lab reported that when they tried Backstory with their own photo, it mistakenly identified them as another journalist.
