Google's Brin Urges AI Staff to 'Go All In' on Gemini Amid Rivalry with Anthropic and OpenAI

Google co-founder Sergey Brin has been pushing key staff to focus on closing the gap with rival AI models, specifically Anthropic and OpenAI. This comes as Alphabet seeks to regain its lead in AI research.

In April, Brin addressed hundreds of employees at a town hall meeting, urging Google DeepMind to move faster and go all-in on the Gemini model.

Despite briefly overtaking its competitors last November with Gemini 3, Google soon fell behind again due to structural problems and disagreements among project leaders. These issues led to limited computing capacity and slower release of models compared to rivals.

As a result, Alphabet has undergone a leadership overhaul at Google DeepMind, with Demis Hassabis stepping aside as chief in favor of Koray Kavukcuoglu. This move is seen as a further erosion of DeepMind's autonomy, which has been reduced since its acquisition by Google in 2014.

Kavukcuoglu will now oversee Gemini and report directly to CEO Sundar Pichai, giving him significant influence over the model's direction.
