Google's Cloud-Dependent Camera Strategy Raises Fears Among Pixel Fans

Florence Ion, a long-time Google Pixel fan and writer for PCMag UK, shares her disappointment with the camera system on the latest Pixel 10 Pro. After switching from the Pixel 9 Pro, she noticed a decline in image quality, particularly when zooming past 10x. The AI processing is overly aggressive, leading to soft images. Ion's main gripe, however, is the reliance on cloud processing for video boost capabilities.

The feature requires an internet connection to upload and process videos before they're available on the phone, which can be a problem in areas with poor coverage. Ion recalls trying to capture concert footage at Warped Tour but couldn't get boosted videos due to connectivity issues. The lack of on-device processing also limits editing capabilities.

Ion hopes Google will address these issues in the upcoming Pixel 11 series, particularly with the introduction of Gemini Nano 4. However, she's skeptical about significant changes given the company's focus on cloud-based services and data centers. For now, she questions whether the Pixel can remain a reliable daily driver if it continues to rely heavily on cloud processing.
