Google's DeepMind Undergoes Leadership Shake-Up as Talent Flocks to Rival Labs

Google's DeepMind has undergone significant leadership changes, with co-founder Demis Hassabis no longer involved in day-to-day operations. Jeff Dean, former Google Chief Scientist and Gemini co-lead, is leaving to start a new lab called Discovery Loop, along with Sanjay Ghemawat, Quoc Le, and Oriol Vinyals.

This move has led many to believe that DeepMind is no longer a frontier lab. The departure of top AI talent, including Jeff Dean, has raised concerns about the lab's ability to retain experts in the field. In fact, over 20% of total TPU shipments from Q3 2026 to Q4 2027 are being sold directly to Anthropic.

The biggest beneficiary of this change is likely Google Cloud (GCP), which will see its revenue growth accelerate as a result. Thomas Kurian, GCP CEO, has emphasized the importance of making TPUs 'general purpose infrastructure' that supports customers like Citadel and the Department of Energy.
