Google's Dominant Search Engine Gives It Unfair Advantage Over Other AI Firms
Google's dominance in search has given it an unfair advantage over other AI firms, allowing its crawler to see three times more of the web than OpenAI and Microsoft. Matthew Prince, CEO of Cloudflare, a firm that handles traffic for about a fifth of the web, says this strategy makes it difficult for publishers to block AI training without losing search traffic.
The line between content collected for search and AI answers has become blurred as Google's bot helps feed both search results and its flagship AI model. This blurring has broader consequences: if AI increasingly reads, summarizes, and rewrites the web without sending readers back to human-created pages, the incentive to produce original information starts to fade.
According to Cloudflare, in 2026, AI agents generated more than 57% of web traffic, surpassing humans for the first time. Prince predicts this divergence will become more extreme in the next few years.
