Google's 'Don't Be Evil' Promise Proves Harder to Keep
Claire Stapleton, a former Google employee, has written a memoir titled 'Don't Be Evil' that delves into her experiences at the tech giant. In 2018, she was part of a walkout involving around 20,000 employees in response to a New York Times story about executives accused of sexual misconduct receiving multimillion-dollar exit packages.
The protest was a turning point for Stapleton, who had initially been inspired by Google's utopian ideals. However, as she became more involved with the company, she began to see how corporate realities undermined these ideals.
Stapleton spoke with Business Insider about her time at Google and the challenges of maintaining the company's original mission statement. She noted that Google had vowed not to become a conventional company but found it difficult to stick to this promise as it grew.
