Google's European Energy Head Joins Mistral Compute Amid Tech Sovereignty Push
Marc Oman, Google's head of energy sourcing strategy for Europe, has left the company after nearly 12 years to join Mistral Compute, a subdivision of France's AI lab. Oman spent his career at Google closing large-scale renewable energy deals in multiple European countries.
At Mistral Compute, Oman will be based out of Paris and will work with the team to accelerate their mission, which involves deploying private HPC resources for training and running artificial intelligence models.
Oman emphasized the importance of European tech sovereignty, stating that it's 'a necessity' to preserve European values and reduce dependence on foreign hyperscalers. He noted that he feels ready to take on this challenge at Mistral Compute.
Mistral Compute aims to deploy more than 1GW of compute in Europe by 2030, a goal they announced earlier in August. The company recently raised €3 billion ($3.48bn) in a Series D round and plans to spend a significant portion on compute infrastructure.
