Google's Gemini AI Assistant Expands Capabilities in Google Workspace

Google's Gemini AI assistant is expanding its capabilities in Google Workspace, moving beyond simple meeting summaries and everyday advice. In July and August of this year, Google rolled out several new features, including Ask Gemini in Chat, Workspace Studio skills, Sheets canvas, and Admin Assist.

The goal is to make Gemini a more integrated and useful tool for users, providing them with context-aware work that can be reused or acted on. With the help of Workspace Intelligence, which connects emails, chats, files, projects, and organizational knowledge, Gemini can now search Workspace data, create updates or images, catch people up on discussions, and manage tasks and events from Chat.

The company's summer updates have pushed Gemini deeper into collaboration, content creation, data work, administration, and automation. The AI assistant is also becoming a more integral part of the Google Workspace platform, with new features such as Ask Gemini in Chat, which provides a unified command line for work, and Sheets canvas, which can turn spreadsheet data into interactive mini-apps.

Google's Workspace Intelligence gives Gemini more context to draw from, making it easier for the AI assistant to operate as a true platform copilot. With its recent releases, Google has made significant progress in turning Gemini into an automation layer, with features such as reusable skills and no-code flows that use Gemini to analyze content and handle multi-step work.
