Google's Gemini Gains Momentum as Brin Pushes for AI Focus
Google's co-founder Sergey Brin is urging Alphabet to focus on its proprietary Large Language Model (LLM) Gemini, which has seen significant growth in recent months. The model now processes 22 billion API tokens per minute and has 950 million monthly active users through the Gemini App.
Brin's vision for Gemini involves improving its capabilities, particularly with coding becoming increasingly important in developing frontier AI. This aligns with the company's decision to have Koray Kavukcuoglu oversee Gemini's development and its app and developer teams.
Kavukcuoglu will take over as SVP of DeepMind, Google's AI unit, following Demis Hassabis' departure. Hassabis is stepping down after years at the helm, and Kavukcuoglu brings a wealth of experience in AI leadership to his new role.
Google has been aggressively expanding its artificial intelligence operations, centralizing AI leadership and development at its main campus to accelerate progress against rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic. The company has committed to massive future spending on AI infrastructure to power its next-generation models and products.
