Google's Gemini Hits One Billion Monthly Users Amid AI Sector Tensions
Google's Gemini AI assistant has reached one billion monthly users, marking its fastest-growing product ever according to CEO Sundar Pichai. This milestone comes after a major reorganization of Google's AI division and despite the tech giant facing competition from other AI labs.
The 14th product to reach a billion users, Gemini is now integrated into various aspects of Google's ecosystem, including search, Gmail, Google Maps, and YouTube. However, its new flagship model, Gemini 3.5 Pro, has yet to be released, with rivals like OpenAI already launching more powerful models for generating computer code.
In a sign of tightening competition, ChatGPT's market share in AI assistants fell below 50% in the first half of the year, according to research firm Sensor Tower. This development has sparked concerns about Google's ability to maintain its lead in the AI sector.
