Google's Gemini Pro Delay Leaves Company in the Lurch
Google's flagship Gemini Pro model has been delayed yet again, leaving Google without a top-tier offering. The delay has been ongoing for months, missing targets in June, mid-July, and early August. According to Polymarket, the probability of no new Gemini Pro release before September 30th is 69%, with launch dates on the market trading in low single digits.
The hold-up is due to technical issues, specifically the model's coding capabilities. Google has reset and updated its training data in late June to fix code-generation problems, but internal results were disappointing again. This delay carries a competitive cost, as rivals like Anthropic and OpenAI have shipped models that outperform Gemini.
Google has filled the gap with cheaper, faster Flash models, including Gemini 3.7 Flash, which reached general availability on August 13th. The company has also begun pre-training an entirely new flagship, Gemini 4, fueling speculation that they may skip ahead rather than salvage the delayed release.
