Google's General Counsel Warns Against Overreliance on AI in Legal Matters
Google's general counsel, Halimah DeLaine Prado, emphasized that AI should not replace human judgment in legal matters. In an interview, she stated that AI can help democratize good legal advice but should be seen as a complement to human lawyers and judges.
The comment comes after Google released Gemini Enterprise for Legal, an AI platform designed for law firms and in-house legal teams. The platform can assist with tasks such as legal briefs, citation verification, contract management, regulatory monitoring, and data discovery.
DeLaine Prado highlighted that while AI can gather and synthesize information much faster than lawyers, it cannot be the final decision-maker. She noted that AI can help lawyers access relevant information in minutes instead of days, giving them more time to think critically.
The legal profession has been seen as a prime target for AI assistance due to its document-heavy nature and reliance on enormous bodies of case law. DeLaine Prado expressed optimism about the technology's potential to help smaller firms and legal aid organizations compete with larger practices.
