Google's Geothermal Deal Highlights Growing Demand for Firm, Round-the-Clock Clean Power
Google has signed a 396 MW deal with Fervo Energy for enhanced geothermal power from Cape Station in Utah, with an option to expand to nearly 1 GW by June 2030.
The deal delivers capacity in four tranches of 99 MW starting in Q3 2028 over a 15-year term, with parent guarantees from both Fervo and Alphabet.
Google's choice of geothermal power is notable because it provides firm, round-the-clock power, which is what data centers need. Unlike solar or wind power, enhanced geothermal runs continuously.
This deal follows Google's previous agreements for record-scale solar projects in Texas and a 933 MW natural gas deal with Crusoe.
Google's peers Meta and Microsoft have also signed advanced-geothermal and long-term nuclear-adjacent deals over the past two years, all of which prioritize firm, round-the-clock clean power.
