Google's Most Influential AI Pioneer Leaves to Start New Startup

Google's AI pioneer and 'most Google person', Jeff Dean, is leaving the company to start a new startup called Discovery Loop. He will be joined by colleagues Sanjay Ghemawat, Quoc Le, and Oriol Vinyals. This move represents one of the most significant departures from Google's AI organization in years.

Dean, who started at Google in 1999 as employee number 30, has played a key role in nearly all of the company's major products, including search, ads, and chips. He was also instrumental in guiding artificial intelligence advances as the company's chief scientist.

The loss of Dean will likely impact morale inside Google and make it harder for the company to recruit top AI talent, according to current and former employees. This departure comes at a time when Google is facing uncertainty about its ability to keep pace with OpenAI and Anthropic PBC.
