Google's Paywall Problem: How the Search Giant is Losing Readers and Publishers
Google News is ranking paywalled stories at the top of its feed, but when readers tap on them, they get a subscription wall or 'you have reached your free article limit' message instead of the article. This issue affects 74% of U.S. adults who say they encounter paywalls while looking for news online, with 38% experiencing it often or extremely often. When readers hit a paywall, only 1% buy access on the spot, while 53% go look for the story elsewhere and 32% give up.
The problem lies in Google's crawler being able to see behind the paywall but still directing readers to it. The company has had a solution since 2020 through its News Showcase program, which pays publishers to offer registered users limited free access to select paywalled stories. However, this feature is only available in a separate tab of the app and not in the main search results or news feed.
The same publishers who are subject to Google's paywall problem are now accusing the company of another issue: summarizing their journalism directly in search results without consent or compensation. This contradiction highlights the need for Google to address its paywall issues, which currently benefit the company more than readers or publishers.
