Google's Pixel Updates Promise Falls Short on Older Handsets

Google's Pixel handsets were once hailed for their seven-year software support, but this promise has created a new problem. The company now relies on quarterly updates to deliver trendy features, making major OS upgrades less relevant.

This bifurcated update stream has made the seven years of Android updates less significant. While version updates and security patches are still delivered promptly, the rollout of new Pixel/Android Drops is fragmented and staggered.

Exclusive AI features on newer handsets have left older models behind, with some features never making it to previous generations. The latest example is the Magic Capture tool on the Pixel 11, which won't be available on last year's Pixel 10 or older models.

Google could address this issue by offloading heavy compute tasks to the cloud, as they've done in the past with video processing. This would allow older handsets to access new features without requiring hardware upgrades.
