Four top Google AI minds have left the company to launch their own startup, Discovery Loop. Jeff Dean, who joined Google in 1999 and became its Chief Scientist, is one of the co-founders.

The other three co-founders are Oriol Vinyals, Sanjay Ghemawat, and Quoc Le, all with impressive resumes featuring multiple generations of Google Search, Google Ads, Google News, Google Translate, TensorFlow, Gemini, model distillation, and Large Language Models (LLMs).

This move comes after Demis Hassabis stepped aside from his role leading Google DeepMind to take a more strategic position as chair.

The AI talent shake-up is not unique to Google, with other big tech companies like Meta, Microsoft, and OpenAI experiencing similar departures and reshuffles in recent years.

Experts say the trend of top AI minds leaving big tech firms is driven by a desire for innovation and a thirst for risk-taking, as well as a recognition that eye-watering salaries are not enough to retain top talent.
