Google's Top AI Talent Makes Exit After 22-Year Tenure
Google's artificial intelligence (AI) organization is facing another significant loss after AI pioneer Jeff Dean announced his departure from the company. Dean, who has been at Google for over two decades and played a key role in developing many of its major products, will leave alongside colleagues Sanjay Ghemawat, Quoc Le, and Oriol Vinyals to build a startup called Discovery Loop.
The move comes after a broader executive shuffle that saw Google DeepMind head Demis Hassabis shift into a chairman role. Current and former employees said morale inside Google dipped following the company's AI leadership shakeup, making it more difficult to recruit top AI talent.
Dean has been instrumental in guiding artificial intelligence advances as Google's chief scientist. He co-founded Google Brain in 2011 and pioneered TensorFlow in 2016, which is open-source software that lets people build AI systems more easily. His tenure was not without controversy, however, as he raised concerns about a paper produced by the company's ethical AI team.
