GrapheneOS is overhauling its Messaging app to reduce reliance on Google Messages. The new version features a redesigned interface built using Android Compose, as well as significant improvements and bug fixes.

The project's developers are working on integrating RCS support directly into the Messaging app, rather than relying on Google Messages. This transition will happen in stages, with the team initially recreating the part of RCS handled by Google Messages before implementing it themselves.

GrapheneOS is also introducing a secure paste feature to prevent apps from accessing clipboard data copied by other apps. This new feature will block most apps from reading sensitive information stored in the clipboard, except for those that place their own content there.

The team is going beyond just Messaging, with plans to overhaul or replace other AOSP apps, including the outdated Gallery app.
