Greenock Data Centre Plans Meet Strong Resistance from Councillors and Residents
Plans for an enormous data centre on the former IBM site in Greenock are facing stiff opposition from councillors, community leaders, and residents. The proposed development, submitted by Slate Island Developments Ltd, would see a massive 80,000 square metre hyperscale data centre built on 28 hectares of the Spango Valley site.
Despite attracting over 1,600 objections, concerns remain about noise pollution, environmental impact, and the loss of an approved mixed-use masterplan. Councillor Paul Cassidy expressed his support for investment in Inverclyde but emphasized that it must be the right kind, at the right scale, and with proper regard for safety, the environment, and long-term interests.
Community councils have also spoken out against the plans, citing concerns about water usage for cooling, environmental impact, and potential disruption. Councillor Cassidy pointed to the site's original planning permission for 450 homes and suggested that this vision should be pursued instead of a data centre.
