Greenock Data Centre Plans Unveiled as IBM Site Set for New Chapter

A former IBM site in Greenock could be transformed into a major new data centre development. Slate Island Developments Ltd has submitted proposals to Inverclyde Council for the redevelopment of Spango Valley, where IBM operated from 1954 until its closure in 2017.

The plans include four data centre buildings providing around 80,000 square metres of floorspace, as well as landscaping and parking. The existing woodland around the site would be largely retained.

Slate Island Developments has been engaging with Inverclyde Council since summer 2025 and has carried out community outreach through public exhibitions and online events. A spokesperson for Slate Island said: 'Spango Valley has a proud history as a centre for technology and employment in Inverclyde, and these proposals offer an exciting opportunity to open a new chapter for this important site.'

The data centres would be part of the wider Spango Valley project, which also includes a Battery Energy Storage System. The spokesperson noted that data centres are becoming increasingly important for supporting everyday digital services, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence.
