Greenock's Spango Valley Set for Data Centre Revamp
A former IBM site in Greenock could be transformed into a major new data centre development.
Slate Island Developments Ltd has submitted proposals to Inverclyde Council for the redevelopment of Spango Valley, which would see four data centre buildings constructed, providing around 80,000 square metres of floorspace.
The development would also include landscaping, parking and sustainable drainage, while most of the existing woodland around the site would be retained. The proposals form part of a wider project for Spango Valley that includes a separately planned Battery Energy Storage System.
Slate Island Developments has been in discussions with Inverclyde Council since summer 2025 and has carried out community engagement as the proposals have progressed. A spokesperson for Slate Island Developments Ltd said: 'Spango Valley has a proud history as a centre for technology and employment in Inverclyde, and these proposals offer an exciting opportunity to open a new chapter for this important site.'
Data centres are becoming increasingly important infrastructure supporting everyday digital services, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence. The proposed scheme could bring large-scale technology activity back to Spango Valley after the closure and demolition of the former IBM complex.
