Demis Hassabis, co-founder of Google DeepMind, is stepping down from his role as day-to-day manager of the artificial intelligence division. He will become chairman of DeepMind and chief scientist at Alphabet, its parent company.

Hassabis' longtime colleague Koray Kavukcuoglu will take over operational leadership of DeepMind as senior vice president, rather than CEO. Hassabis founded DeepMind in 2014 and sold it to Google the same year.

Under his leadership, the team created AlphaGo, which mastered the Chinese board game Go, as well as AlphaFold for predicting protein structure. Hassabis was a co-recipient of the 2022 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on AlphaFold.
