Hawaii Air Force Base Builds Custom Hangar for Massive Cargo Plane

The Boeing C-17 Globemaster III is one of the largest aircraft in the world, requiring a substantial hangar to accommodate it.

Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii needed to house this massive cargo plane and built a custom-designed hangar that measures 200 ft. wide with a 6-leaf hangar door.

The unique feature of this hangar is the precise cutout in the doors, which seals around the tail of the C-17, allowing the aircraft's fuselage to fit snugly inside while the tail sticks out.

This clever solution was necessary due to space constraints at the base, where most critical work takes place forward of the tail. As a result, mechanics can perform maintenance tasks on the airplane in a dry and secure environment.
