Hazbin Hotel: A24's Adult Animated Series Struggles to Find Its Footing

A24's latest series, Hazbin Hotel, brings together Disney-esque animation and adult themes in an attempt to create something unique. Creator Vivienne Medrano's passion project is set in a halfway house for demons and sinners, where the protagonist, Charlie Morningstar, advocates for rehabilitation over annihilation.

The first three episodes of Hazbin Hotel struggle to find its footing, weighed down by exposition and jarring dialogue that contrasts with its Disney-inspired animation style. However, the show begins to shine in episode 4, particularly with standout performances from Blake Roman and Keith David as Angel and Husk.

Roman's character, a provocative porn star, drops his swaggering facade to let loose with his pain through the song 'Poison,' which showcases Medrano's ability to explore dark themes. The show also doubles down on this concept with a duet between Angel and Husk that transcends its aesthetic of cutesy meets crass.

Despite some promising moments, Hazbin Hotel still has growing pains, particularly in its focus on Charlie, the most childish and cheery of the crew. The series may need more episodes to overcome this and strike a chord that feels unique rather than a reaction to hyperactive heroines.
