Head & Shoulders Shifts Focus to Scalp Health Awareness
Procter & Gamble's flagship anti-dandruff shampoo brand Head & Shoulders has shifted its marketing focus from dandruff removal to scalp health, culminating in the launch of 'Scalp Health Awareness Month' initiative in the UK in September 2026. The campaign is built on commissioned research that identified a distinct and previously under-addressed dimension of the category: dandruff-related social stigma among teenagers and young adults.
The brand's research, which was conducted in partnership with the Diana Award's Anti-Bullying Programme, found that four in ten people had experienced bullying because of their looks, 27% specifically because of their hair, and 36% because of dandruff. Almost seven in ten 13-to-25-year-olds reported a lack of confidence in their appearance as a result of bullying.
The campaign incorporates commentary from Dr Faye Bate, a UK-trained medical doctor and digital content creator, who links pubertal hormonal shifts to sebum production and scalp microbiome changes. The brand's objective is not primarily transactional but reputational and category-educational: positioning Head & Shoulders as an authority on scalp health broadly.
