Hedera Blockchain Powers Cocoa Supply Chain Transparency Revolution
A new initiative led by Merck, PwC Germany, and The Hashgraph Group aims to transform the chocolate supply chain through blockchain technology. The Hedera blockchain is being used to create a 'digital passport' for each cocoa batch, recording origin, quality, and compliance data.
This integrated solution brings together three key components: TrackTrace Digital Product Passport, M-Trust™ physical authentication technology, and PwC Germany's consulting services. By linking each physical cocoa batch to a verifiable digital identity, the initiative ensures transparency, auditability, and trust across the entire value chain.
The new European regulations, which will come into effect from December 30, 2026, require companies to prove the origin of cocoa with precise data, and fines can reach up to 4% of annual turnover. The solution is designed to help actors in the cocoa supply chain prepare for these regulations.
The initiative's scalability and future applications are vast, as it can be extended to other sectors where origin, authenticity, quality, and legal compliance are critical. The key players emphasize that this approach goes beyond document fragmentation and self-declarations, providing companies with a solid foundation for compliance, quality, and consumer trust.
