Hikers Rescued from Mount Shasta After Relying on Google's Gemini

Three hikers were rescued from California's Mount Shasta after relying on Google's AI chatbot Gemini to plan their expedition. The trio set off at 3am, but despite being told to turn around by noon if they hadn't reached the summit, they made it to the top at 7pm.

However, in attempting to descend in the dark, they called the sheriff's office for directions and spent the night in Mud Creek Canyon before being rescued the next morning by Forest Service rangers and volunteers.

The Siskiyou County sheriff's office noted that Gemini advised the hikers to bring 'far less food and water than their group required', especially considering their planned 8-hour ascent became a multiday ordeal.

While it is unclear whether Gemini bears full responsibility, the sheriff's office emphasized the importance of verifying information with local authorities before embarking on a trip.
