Home Depot Collects Rechargeable Batteries to Prevent Fires
Old rechargeable batteries may seem harmless when thrown away, but they can pose a significant safety risk. Damaged lithium-ion batteries can ignite and spread quickly once they start on fire.
The Home Depot is one of several retailers that collect old rechargeable batteries for recycling. The company has partnered with The Battery Network to provide in-store collection points for over 20 years.
Eligible devices include smartphones, cordless phones, cameras, laptops, toys, two-way radios, and other portable electronics. However, batteries from power tools or outdoor equipment are not accepted.
Batteries that have been crushed, punctured, or damaged raise the risk of fire, especially when disposed of in the trash. Alkaline batteries, on the other hand, can be disposed of with household garbage if recycling is unavailable.
