Home Depot Sees Sales Surge as Americans Opt for Smaller Renovations
Home Depot has reported its fastest sales growth in nearly four years, defying expectations and beating forecasts. The world's largest home improvement chain saw revenue rise by 1.7% in the last quarter at stores open for at least a year, nearly double the predicted 0.9%. This unexpected boost pushed earnings above estimates by 4%, providing a much-needed spark to the company.
The surge in sales was driven by smaller ticket items such as power tools, patio gear, and plants. A July heatwave also contributed significantly, with many customers buying fans to cope with the sweltering temperatures. However, despite this positive news, Home Depot has chosen not to raise its full-year forecast, indicating that larger remodel projects remain on hold.
The company's earnings echo a broader trend in the housing market. With mortgage rates having climbed back up to 6.7% from around 6% earlier this year, and existing-home sales remaining flat, people are opting for smaller renovations rather than moving to a new home. This shift is detrimental to retailers like Home Depot, which rely heavily on big remodel projects that typically occur when individuals buy or sell properties.
