According to social media posts from employees claiming to work at Home Depot, when an item sits on clearance through its final markdown cycle without selling, the store's pricing system marks its price as $0.01. This one cent price is meant to keep the item on the store's books until employees can remove it from the system and send it to receiving for disposal.

However, sometimes employees miss removing these unsellable products from the sales floor, resulting in items like kitchen sinks being available to customers at a penny. This has led to a 'treasure hunt' of sorts among shoppers, with some using discount shopping apps and scanning barcodes to find these rare deals.

While it's possible to purchase penny-priced items, there's no guarantee that the sale will be honored. Some posters on Reddit claim that Home Depot employees are required to honor the price for one penny-priced item, but not additional stock of the same item.
