Home Depot Surges on Strong Earnings Despite Sluggish Housing Market
Home Depot's earnings report has provided some much-needed relief to investors. The world's largest home improvement chain saw its fastest sales growth in nearly four years, with revenue at stores open for at least a year rising by 1.7%. This is more than double the expected 0.9%, and pushed earnings above estimates by 4%.
The company's success can be attributed to smaller ticket items such as power tools, patio gear, and plants. A July heatwave also contributed to sales, with fans being a particularly popular item.
However, the housing market remains sluggish, with big remodels seeing little demand. Despite this, Home Depot has chosen not to raise its full-year forecast, instead opting to hold steady.
The company's earnings report is closely watched by investors, as it can provide insight into consumer spending habits. With mortgage rates at a one-year high and house prices rising, consumers are choosing to stay put and fix up their existing homes rather than move to new ones.
