Honeywell Aerospace Unit Sees Sales Growth Amid Margin Pressure
Honeywell International's aerospace unit reported steady sales growth in its second-quarter results, but margins were pressured by an inventory charge. The company's stock price held above $235 as investors weighed the pros and cons of this situation.
The aerospace business saw net sales increase to $4.52 billion, a 5% rise from the same period last year on both reported and organic bases. However, adjusted earnings per share declined by 32%, due in part to an inventory obsolescence charge of $50 million taken in the quarter.
Management explained that excluding this one-time charge, segment-adjusted EBIT would have grown 3% year over year instead of declining. This suggests that core profitability trends remain positive. The company also provided updated guidance for stand-alone Honeywell Aerospace, indicating a range of $4.35 billion to $4.45 billion for pro forma adjusted EBIT in the current year.
Despite margin pressure, order dynamics provide a counterweight to this narrative. Over the past 12 months, orders increased by 8% compared to the prior year, resulting in a book-to-bill ratio of 1.1. This can support future sales growth if the company converts its backlog into deliveries on schedule.
