Honeywell MagNav Quantum Navigation System Demonstrates 89% Accuracy Improvement
A recent test flight of an Embraer 170 over the Pacific Ocean has demonstrated the potential of quantum navigation technology in GPS-free conditions. The Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) reported that Honeywell's MagNav system improved aircraft position accuracy by 89% compared to traditional backup methods.
The four-hour and 23-minute flight took place between Seattle's Puget Sound and southern Alaska, where conventional visual references were largely unavailable. The MagNav system used quantum sensors to read the Earth's natural magnetic field and compare those measurements with magnetic signatures in the planet's crust.
This provided a continuous navigation reference that remained available regardless of weather or time of day, and could not be spoofed or blocked by hostile forces. DIU said this makes it a potential navigation reference when satellite signals are disrupted.
