Honeywell's Quantum Navigation System Successfully Guides Aircraft Over Pacific
Honeywell Aerospace and the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) have successfully tested a quantum-sensor-based navigation system, guiding an Embraer 170 test aircraft over the Pacific Ocean for nearly five hours without relying on GPS. The flight, part of DIU's MagNav magnetic navigation program, achieved position accuracy 89% better than conventional backup navigation would have.
The pilots used standard tablets to view the navigation interface, demonstrating that operators could adopt the system without extensive flight-deck overhauls. This achievement showcases the potential for MagNav capabilities in real-world applications.
Honeywell Aerospace supported the development of the MagNav quantum navigation system, which can detect subtle variations in Earth's magnetic field caused by the composition of the planet's crust. This technology cannot be jammed or spoofed because it uses a reference signal from the ground rather than satellites.
