Honeywell's Satellite Antenna Validates Safe Long-Range Drone Flights
Honeywell Aerospace has made significant strides in satellite communications technology with the validation of its new antenna designed for drones. The device, created at Honeywell's Research Center in Brno, Czechia, is part of the 'Iris Global' program by the European Space Agency aimed at modernizing aviation communications.
The lightweight antenna provides a reliable connection between the drone and pilot, crucial for safe operation at long distances. Flight trials were conducted at Budkovice Airport, where the VersaWave communication system was integrated to switch signals between satellite and ground cellular networks, ensuring continuous communication.
The tests not only validated the device but also demonstrated its ability to safely operate with traditional manned aircraft. The U-Space concept, a European drone traffic management system, was used to simulate real-world scenarios.
