Housing Market Hopes Rise as Berkshire and JPMorgan Bet Big
Berkshire Hathaway and JPMorgan Chase are betting big on a housing market recovery. Berkshire just acquired homebuilder Taylor Morrison for $6.8 billion, while JPMorgan is committing $750 billion to help build or preserve one million affordable housing units.
The housing market has been sluggish since interest rates rose between 2022 and 2023, but there are signs of a rebound. Home sales increased 4.5% year over year in the latest data, while homebuilders delivered 23,000 closings in 2025 across 21 states.
Berkshire's move to acquire Taylor Morrison is more than just a bet on a housing recovery; it also streamlines operations and can lead to improved margins for the entire business. JPMorgan's investment aims to boost home construction, which could suppress prices and make home ownership more affordable.
