Huang Predicts Hundreds of Thousands of New Jobs in Skilled Trades Amid AI Boom
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang is optimistic about the future of work in the age of AI. While some experts, like Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, worry that automation will lead to massive unemployment, Huang predicts that the technology will create hundreds of thousands of new jobs, including in the skilled trades.
Huang points out that the construction of data centers and factories for AI requires a large workforce with specialized skills. He estimates that this buildout will create 'hundreds of thousands' of jobs, citing the example of Nvidia's own $105 billion commitment to building an OpenAI data center in Ohio, which is expected to require thousands of skilled workers.
The need for skilled tradespeople is not limited to tech companies. As Jon Gray, president and chief operating officer at Blackstone, notes, there will be a 'huge boom' in blue-collar employment over the next five years due to the growth of data centers, reindustrialization, and other infrastructure projects.
However, experts warn that there is a talent gap persisting in the skilled trades. An estimated 2.1 million skilled trades jobs could go unfilled nationally by 2030. To address this challenge, leaders from companies like BlackRock, Carhartt, Ford Motor Company, and Google have formed the Alliance for America's Skilled Trades to expand training programs across 30 states.
