Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has been known to offer departing employees blunt criticism and personal advice as they leave the company to pursue new ventures. In two separate instances, Huang spoke with founders David Hoeller and Nikita Rudin of Flexion Robotics before they left Nvidia in 2024. The startup aimed to take their robotics technology into the real world, but initially had a name that sounded out of place in the industry.

Huang did not try to persuade the pair to stay at Nvidia, but instead suggested changing their startup's original name from 'Checkpoint' to something more fitting. He also warned them about the challenges they would face in building a company.

A year later, Huang spoke with Bing Xu, another departing employee who had joined Nvidia after his first startup was acquired by the chipmaker. Huang spent two hours discussing Xu's plans to leave and establish an AI startup called INT21, which focused on chip software.

Huang identified communication as Xu's biggest weakness, noting that he sometimes assumed others shared his technical understanding. The CEO suggested staying at Nvidia would provide a better path for Xu, but instead prompted him to work on becoming a better communicator. Huang also expressed concern about Xu's health problems and advised him to take time off.
