Huawei Warns Nvidia is Running Out of Room for Improvement
Chinese tech giant Huawei is predicting that Nvidia will soon face a physical limit on chip performance, similar to one it claims to be experiencing itself. According to He Tingbo, Huawei's 'chip queen', this limit means that shrinking transistors will no longer be enough to drive progress in computing.
Huawei has developed its own alternative approach, called LogicFolding, which stacks circuitry into vertical layers to increase transistor density and reach advanced-node performance without the need for expensive equipment. However, Nvidia's CEO Jensen Huang is skeptical of this approach, calling it a breakthrough but insisting it will not threaten his company's lead.
The stakes are high in this dispute, with China being one of Nvidia's largest potential markets. Huawei has been racing to build its own high-bandwidth memory to close the gap in AI chip performance, and Beijing recently featured Huawei's secret chip lab on national television as part of a campaign to promote Chinese engineering.
Huawei's claims about a shared limit on chip performance are not without controversy, with some questioning whether the company is simply trying to reset expectations while it lags behind. If Nvidia can continue to find new ways to improve its chips through packaging, software, and memory, the ceiling Huawei is counting on may remain comfortably out of reach.
